Your cosmetic tattoo will turn out best with proper preparation since it all starts with a good canvas. The procedure area must be healthy, strong, non-sensitive and non-irritated. Here’s how to get your skin ready:
24 hours prior (to avoid excessive bleeding and poor color deposit):
Do not consume alcohol and caffeine (including coffee, tea, energy drinks).Do not consume blood thinning medications and supplements such as Tylenol, Advil/Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Fish Oil, Niacin, Nutritional Shakes, Vitamin E and "Hair, Skin, Nail" Supplements.
1 week prior:
Refrain from picking, tweezing, waxing, threading, tinting and performing electrolysis on your brows.
2 weeks prior:
Eliminate any Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) product on and close to the eyebrow area. Do not tan or sun-burn your face.
4 weeks prior:
Discontinue use of Retin-A. Avoid chemical peels, microdermabrasion or facial treatments. Do not inject Botox and fillers on the forehead, temple, and eye area.
Other pointers:
If you have been on prescription Accutane in the past, you MUST wait at least one year before considering this procedure.
If you plan to go on a vacation, it is recommended to plan your trip a minimum of 1 week after the procedure.
Healing Process Overview:
Immediately after the procedure, your brows will look darker and bolder in color and more sharply defined. This look can last for up to a week. The treated area may feel like a sunburn but there should be minimal discomfort, scabbing or flaking of the skin.
At around a week’s mark, your brows will start to flake and may look a little patchy. The flaking should finish after about two weeks. During this process, your tattoo will soften and lighten. Be patient even if you think too much color has been lost as your skin is still regenerating and naturally exfoliating.
Wait for 4-6 weeks to see the true color resurface. Your touch-up/adjustments can be done after 6-8 weeks following the initial appointment.
Day 1 and Day 2:
Leave the brows alone and keep the procedure area clean.
If there’s excess oozing of lymph fluid, gently blot the area with a clean tissue. If needed, gently wash the area with distilled or filtered water and pat dry with a clean tissue.
Day 3 to Day 14:
Apply Vitamin A+D ointment (given to you at the initial appointment). Carefully wipe off the old ointment before reapplying a new layer.
If you have dry/normal/combo skin, apply twice a day (AM and PM).
If you have oily skin, apply once a day.
Avoid:
Skin care and cosmetic products such as:
acids and exfoliants (e.g. glycolic, lactic, AHA);
anti-acne products (e.g. Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Proactiv, etc.);
lightening creams (skin bleaching creams) such as hydroquinone.
Procedures such as facials, botox, chemical treatments or microdermabrasion for 4 weeks.
Tanning beds nor direct sun exposure (wear a hat).
Sauna/steam room/hot tub/submerging the brows in water.
Vigorous exercises and working out (the acidity in your sweat will cause the scab to lift prematurely).
Sleeping on your face.
You may shower or bathe normally, but avoid getting soaps, shampoos or other cleansers on the treated area for the first five days as they can be detrimental to the bonding process that must take place for the pigment to stabilize in the dermis.
If there is scabbing or flaking, do not pick and allow it to come off on its own (once the flakes have fallen off, a shiny layer of healing skin will completely cover the hair strokes. It may appear as though the tattooed area has completely disappeared. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair strokes will slowly reappear at a lighter shade as your skin regenerates).
Day 15 and onwards:
Apply sunscreen on the brows daily.
Avoid exfoliating or applying any acids on the brow area.
Rinse and dry the brows thoroughly when in contact with chlorine.
If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal, please inform the laser technician. Continue at your own discretion. Laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the tattooed area.
